The crisis worsened for Lehman Brothers when a story about their losses and plans to raise new capital was leaked, further intensifying the panic. Tensions within the firm escalated, and despite efforts to secure capital from the Korea Development Bank, the firm's stock continued to fall. Eventually, Lehman's president, Joseph Gregory, offered to resign, and the firm's CFO Erin Callan was demoted in a bid to restore confidence.

However, with Lehman Brothers on the brink of collapse, the entire financial system was in jeopardy. Despite efforts to find a solution, Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy, and the financial crisis deepened with the collapse of other financial giants. The Treasury and the Federal Reserve then intervened with an $85 billion loan for AIG to prevent further market panic. As the crisis continued, Wall Street giants Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley were granted bank holding company status to survive, marking a fundamental shift in the financial landscape.

In the end, the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) was introduced to rescue the financial system from toxic mortgage assets. However, public anger and political skepticism made the passing of TARP a challenging task. Despite these hurdles, the bailout bill was finally passed, and the government injected $250 billion into the banking system to stabilize the financial market, marking the historic nationalization of the financial system.
