This was a message William McRaven shared with cadets at the United States Military Academy. They stood before him, immaculately dressed, embodying values of Duty, Honor, and Country. The academy's mission is to produce “leaders of character,” guided by a simple yet powerful Honor Code: “A cadet will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do.”

This sentiment was on McRaven's mind as he sat in a Naval History class at the University of Texas, listening to Lieutenant Jim McCoy discuss the Battle of Midway. 

The Battle of Midway, in June 1942, was a pivotal moment in World War II. The Japanese aimed to lure American carriers into a trap by threatening the strategic base at Midway. However, the Americans had partially deciphered the Japanese code. Despite doubts and challenges, including a damaged USS Yorktown and the absence of the experienced Admiral Halsey, the ultimate decision to defend Midway fell to Admiral Chester Nimitz.

Nimitz, born in Fredericksburg, Texas, and a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, had faced adversity before. As a young officer, he was court-martialed for running a destroyer aground but received only a reprimand due to his exemplary record. This incident shaped his understanding of the responsibility and decisiveness required in command.

Facing the decision to defend Midway, Nimitz consulted his staff, but the weight of the decision was his alone. The stakes were high, and he was acutely aware of the potential loss of life and strategic consequences. In a conversation with Admiral Halsey, Nimitz expressed his apprehension. Halsey reminded him of his own words: "When in command, command." This galvanized Nimitz, who understood the need for decisive leadership.

Golda Meir once said, “It isn’t enough to believe in something; you have to have the stamina to meet the obstacles and overcome them.” This sentiment echoes through the mantra of the SEALs: "The Only Easy Day Was Yesterday."

During morning calisthenics, Petty Officer Halliday quit SEAL training by ringing the bell three times. Despite completing the grueling Hell Week, Halliday underestimated the future challenges. The sign behind the instructor’s stand said it all: THE ONLY EASY DAY WAS YESTERDAY. This reminder emphasizes that each day demands full effort, especially for leaders who must inspire and lead by example.

Admiral Chuck LeMoyne, despite facing constant criticism and throat cancer, never showed frustration. He reorganized the SEALs and Special Boat Units, demonstrating resilience and leadership. LeMoyne’s courage and humor remained intact even when he had to use an electronic speech aid. He embodied the SEAL ethos until his passing in 1997.

In 2002, after surviving a parachute accident, McRaven struggled through a SEAL conference workout, motivated by LeMoyne’s spirit. A young lieutenant questioned his effort, but McRaven knew that every leader must continually prove themselves. Leadership requires energy, stamina, and resilience every single day.

Paris in the fall is magical, but Afghanistan’s stark reality interrupted McRaven's plans to reunite with his family. A civilian-casualty incident demanded his immediate attention. Despite the personal cost, McRaven knew he had to stay and address the crisis. Leaders must confront problems head-on, just as Colonel Joshua Chamberlain did at Gettysburg, saving the Union forces through his aggressive and courageous leadership.

Not all leaders understand this. During the Deepwater Horizon disaster, the CEO’s detached response and refusal to confront the issue led to his downfall. Leaders must embrace challenges and solve institutional crises without retreating.

In Afghanistan, accepting responsibility for the civilian casualties was the first step in regaining trust. Running to the sound of the guns is risky, but necessary. Leaders must act aggressively, assess problems, provide solutions, and communicate intent clearly.

Leadership is about bringing energy and enthusiasm every day, attacking each day as critical, and never thinking the hard days are behind you.

Puckett’s actions earned him the Medal of Honor, symbolizing the Ranger mantra, “Sua Sponte,” or “Of Your Own Accord.” This initiative and courage, doing the right thing without being told, defines true leadership.

Years later, another instance of initiative was displayed by a young SEAL during a ceremony for Lieutenant Commander Moki Martin, a paralyzed Navy SEAL. When the microphone was poorly positioned, a young SEAL took it upon himself to adjust it, ensuring Martin’s words were heard. This act, simple yet decisive, epitomized real leadership.

The principle of initiative extends beyond the battlefield. During the planning of Operation Neptune’s Spear to capture Osama bin Laden, every detail was meticulously prepared. Success hinged not only on boldness—"Who Dares Wins"—but also on extensive planning.
