You would have already noticed that the way we think has changed. Reading long narratives or arguments has become a struggle. Our concentration drifts after a few pages, and the deep reading that used to come naturally now feels like a battle.

The internet has undoubtedly enriched our lives. It has made research easier, sped up our access to information, and connected us with people and ideas we would never have encountered otherwise. However, it's also altered our thought processes. Our minds now expect to take in information in the same swift bursts the internet offers, like a fast-moving stream of particles. The deep, linear thought process we once knew is being replaced by high-speed data processing.

Many of our friends and online bloggers would have noticed a similar change. Scott Karp, a former magazine worker turned blogger, even admits to giving up reading books altogether, suggesting that his thinking has been shaped by his online reading habits. Bruce Friedman, a blogger about computers in medicine, acknowledges that he struggles to read and absorb long articles online or in print. 

Interestingly, some people see the shift as positive, arguing that the internet has made them smarter. They argue that the benefits of the internet – quick access to information and easy sharing of opinions – outweigh the loss of deep reading and concentration.

The internet has not only transformed our thinking, it's also changing the way we view traditional reading. For some, reading a book from cover to cover seems outdated and inefficient. They prefer to cherry-pick the relevant passages using online tools.

So, as we embrace the digital age, we must also grapple with its effects on our minds. We're at a critical point in our intellectual and cultural history, transitioning from linear thinking to a new, high-speed thought process. As we trade away our old linear thought processes for the riches of the internet, we must consider the price we're paying. 

In the end, we may find ourselves echoing HAL's lament: "I can feel it. My mind is going. I can feel it."

Is the Internet Rewiring Our Brains and Killing Deep Reading?

Once a professor of philology at the University of Basel, Friedrich Nietzsche faced health problems that resulted in his resignation. He began exploring Europe for a cure to his ailments. As his vision worsened, Nietzsche feared he'd have to give up writing. He ordered a typewriter, the Danish-made Malling-Hansen Writing Ball, which saved him. 

The machine allowed Nietzsche to type without looking at the page, thus alleviating his eye strain. His friend, Heinrich Köselitz, noticed a change in Nietzsche's writing style, suggesting that the typewriter had influenced his thoughts. Nietzsche agreed, stating, "Our writing equipment takes part in the forming of our thoughts."

While Nietzsche was learning to type, a young medical student named Sigmund Freud was conducting neurophysiology research in Vienna. Freud theorized that the brain was made up of separate cells, with gaps between them playing a vital role in mental functions. Despite initial skepticism, his theory was proven right. The human brain consists of around 100 billion neurons, all tied together into a complex network of circuits that shape our thoughts, emotions, and memories.

Contrary to the prevalent belief that the adult brain is incapable of change, researchers have discovered that the brain is indeed plastic. It can form new neural circuits throughout our lives, and existing ones can grow stronger, weaker, or disappear. The brain's adaptability allows it to adapt to new situations and learn new skills. However, it can also lead to the formation of rigid behaviors and even mental illnesses.

Our brains are shaped not just by our genes and childhood experiences, but also by the way we live and the tools we use. Repetitive physical or mental activity can strengthen certain brain circuits, turning an activity into a habit. Mental activity alone can also alter our neural circuitry. For example, people who imagined playing a piano melody without actually touching the keys exhibited the same brain changes as those who physically practiced the melody.

However, neuroplasticity can also result in intellectual decay. If we stop exercising our mental skills, the brain map space for those skills is turned over to the skills we practice instead. This process, termed "survival of the busiest," means that the vital paths in our brains become the paths of least resistance. They are the paths that most of us will take most of the time, and the farther we proceed down them, the more difficult it becomes to turn back.

The brain's adaptability has given rise to new treatments and hope, but it can also lead to the formation of bad habits, intellectual decay, and mental illnesses. Our ways of thinking, perceiving, and acting are not entirely predetermined. Instead, they're shaped by our experiences, our behavior, and the tools we use.

Similarly, our first maps were rudimentary, eventually evolving into more realistic representations extending beyond what could be physically seen. This evolution of map-making not only mirrors but also guides our intellectual advances. The more we use maps, the more our minds understand reality in terms of maps.

Another profound technology that has shaped our perception is the mechanical clock. People once experienced time as a continuous, cyclical flow, with natural phenomena serving as the only timekeepers. However, the invention of mechanical clocks brought about a new way of viewing time – as a series of equal durations. This mechanistic view of time and space reshaped our thinking, leading us to discern abstract patterns behind visible surfaces.

Our tools, or technologies, are extensions of our capabilities. They can be categorised as physical, sensory, nature-transforming, or intellectual technologies. While any tool can influence our thoughts, intellectual technologies have the most significant and lasting impact on how we think. Intellectual technologies include tools that extend or support our mental powers, such as the typewriter, abacus, slide rule, book, computer, and the Internet. 

The use of maps and clocks changed our language by introducing new metaphors to describe natural phenomena. Other technologies directly change our language by altering how we read and write. 

Among these transformative technologies, the invention of the alphabet was a significant step forward, marking the shift from oral to literary culture. This shift was revolutionary, profoundly reshaping our language and minds. Although the transition from oral to literary culture was met with some resistance, it's clear that the alphabet brought about significant intellectual benefits, opening new frontiers of thought and expression.

Did the Evolution of Maps and Clocks Reshape Our Thinking and Understanding of the World?

In the earliest days of writing, people made marks on anything at hand - rocks, wood, cloth, bone, or broken pottery. These were the first mediums for the written word. The Sumerians were the first to use a specialized medium, etching their cuneiform into clay tablets, used for everything from government records to literary works. However, these tablets were cumbersome, and reading and writing remained specialized skills. 

Around 2500 B.C., the Egyptians started making scrolls from papyrus plants. Scrolls were more flexible and portable than tablets and were adopted by the Greeks and Romans as their primary writing medium. However, they were expensive and a cheaper option was needed. This led to the development of the wax tablet - a wooden frame filled with wax, letters were scratched into the wax with a stylus. 

These tablets made writing and reading more casual and accessible. They were also a precursor to the bound book, invented by a Roman artisan who sewed sheets of parchment between leather rectangles creating the first real book. The bound book, or codex, was easier to navigate, easier to transport, and required less material than a scroll. 

Silent reading was largely unknown in the ancient world. The first writings had no spaces between words, reflecting the continuous flow of spoken language. The lack of word spacing and word order placed an extra cognitive burden on ancient readers. Reading was like working out a puzzle. 

As literacy increased, writers began to impose rules of word order and scribes started dividing sentences into individual words separated by spaces. This made reading quicker and easier. The placing of spaces between words made it possible for people to read quickly and with greater comprehension. It required complex changes in the brain, and reading deeply became possible. 

This advancement in reading was further amplified by the invention of the printing press in 1445 by Johannes Gutenberg, which revolutionized the production of books. Large editions of perfect copies could be produced quickly by a few workers. Books went from being costly, rare commodities to being affordable and plentiful. The growing availability of books stimulated the public's desire for literacy, resulting in a boom in the printing industry. 

The rise of electronic media in the 20th century marked another shift in literacy. The computer and the Internet have become our primary means of storing, processing, and sharing information. The world of the screen has become the new intellectual landscape. It is a world that is different from the world of the page, signaling a new intellectual ethic. As we stand on the brink of this new era, the pathways in our brains are being rerouted once again.


From Clay Tablets to Digital Screens: The Evolution of Literacy and the Written Word

British mathematician Alan Turing is best known for creating the blueprint for the modern computer. His invention, the Turing machine, demonstrated that a computer could be programmed to perform the function of any other information-processing device. This meant that all digital computers are essentially equivalent. 

Turing's universal machine has now become our universal medium. The Internet, a network of interconnected computers and data banks, is the most powerful Turing machine ever. It has become our typewriter, printing press, map, clock, calculator, telephone, post office, library, radio, and TV. 

As the Internet continues to evolve and expand, our use of other media is contracting. This is particularly evident in the newspaper industry, which is facing severe financial challenges as readers and advertisers increasingly move online.

The Internet is also changing the way we read and write. In Japan, young women are composing stories on their mobile phones and uploading them to a website, where others read and comment on them. These stories, known as "cell phone novels", have become so popular that they are now being published as printed books. As the Internet continues to influence our reading habits, it seems inevitable that it will also influence our writing styles.

Despite these changes, books and book reading are still very much a part of our culture. However, as more and more people discover books through online searches, authors will face increasing pressure to tailor their words to search engines. The Internet's tendency to turn all media into social media will also likely have a profound impact on language itself.

In the future, books may become something akin to websites, embedded with links and other digital enhancements. This will change the way we read, making the act of reading more interactive and less solitary. While this may bring new delights and diversions, it will also likely result in a loss of deep reading and other forms of calm and attentive thought. The era of mass book reading may be coming to an end, replaced by an era in which reading is primarily a social activity.

Is the Internet Redefining Reading and Writing, Signalling the End of Traditional Books?

Our brains are constantly evolving and adapting to our environment, a process known as neuroplasticity. As we increasingly use the internet, this tool is reshaping our neural pathways. Research shows that the internet promotes cursory reading, hurried thinking, and superficial learning. While it's possible to engage in deep thinking while surfing the web, the online environment encourages and rewards a more shallow form of learning.

The internet delivers a sensory and cognitive overload that results in rapid alterations in our brain circuits. It's not only the frequency of our online activities but the nature of the stimuli—interactive, addictive—that triggers these alterations. The internet may be the most potent mind-altering technology to come into general use since the book.

Our use of the web involves many paradoxes. One such paradox is that while the internet seizes our attention, it also scatters it. We focus on the medium itself, but we’re distracted by its rapid-fire delivery of competing messages and stimuli. This constant distractedness hampers our minds from thinking deeply or creatively.

Research shows that our online habits are affecting the way we read and process information. People are spending more time scanning and browsing and less time on in-depth reading. As we practice browsing, surfing, scanning, and multitasking, our brains become more adept at those tasks, but we're losing our ability to think deeply, critically and creatively.

In essence, the internet alters our cognitive skills, enhancing some while diminishing others. It may improve our ability to multitask, process visual cues quickly, or make rapid decisions, but it's eroding our capacities for deep processing that underpins mindful knowledge acquisition, critical thinking, and imagination. 

The internet is making us smarter only if we define intelligence by its standards. If we take a broader view of intelligence, one that values deep, contemplative thought, we may conclude that the internet is making us superficial thinkers. 

Neuroplasticity and the Internet: How the Web is Reshaping Our Minds and Altering Our Cognitive Skills

In the mid-19th century, Frederick Taylor revolutionized the industrial world with his stopwatch experiments, which aimed at boosting the efficiency of factory workers. His philosophy of maximizing speed, efficiency, and output was embraced by factory owners around the world and eventually became the underpinning of industrial manufacturing.

Today, the founders of Google, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, are applying a similar philosophy to the realm of intellect. They view the human mind as a computer that needs a faster processor and a bigger hard drive. For them, the ultimate search engine is something as smart as people or smarter. But their ambition to create artificial intelligence reveals a narrow conception of human intellect, equating it with the efficiency of data processing.

While Google has certainly made the internet a more efficient informational medium, its approach also threatens the depth and richness of our intellectual life. It encourages the rapid scanning of information and discourages deep, prolonged engagement with a single argument, idea, or narrative. In essence, Google's pursuit of efficiency is turning us into shallow thinkers.

Moreover, Google's drive to digitize all the world's books and make them searchable online is dismembering the intellectual cohesion of texts. The company's goal is not to promote deep reading but to mine data from books and dispense it in snippets to web users. In the process, Google is undermining the very different kind of efficiency that books brought to reading and thinking - the ability to turn our attention to the interpretation of meaning.

Ultimately, Google's vision of intelligence as mere data processing efficiency is a product of a broader cultural shift. Since the advent of the Industrial Revolution, there has been a growing emphasis on efficiency and productivity. This has led to a gradual erosion of the value we place on contemplation and introspection, the hallmarks of deep thinking. Today, with the rise of the internet and the dominance of companies like Google, we are witnessing the culmination of this trend.

Is Google's Pursuit of Efficiency Turning Us Into Shallow Thinkers?

In a world where we increasingly rely on technology to store our memories, we risk losing the richness of our thoughts and experiences. Socrates was right in predicting that as we began to write down our thoughts, we would become less dependent on our personal memory. Today, with the spread of the internet, we're outsourcing our memory to machines. But this is not without consequences.

The internet, with its constant distractions, makes it hard for us to concentrate and truly process information. This means that our memories are not being consolidated in our brains, but stored externally. As we train our brains to be distracted, we become less capable of deep thinking and more adept at forgetting.

The memory in our brains is organic and alive, unlike the static data stored in computers. It's shaped by attentiveness and engagement, and it's constantly changing. Every time we recall a memory, it gets altered and updated, making it richer and more complex. This biological memory is what gives our minds their depth, and it's what makes us who we are.

The internet may supplement our memory, but it can never replace it. When we rely on the internet to remember for us, we risk losing our connection to our past, our understanding of the present, and our direction in the future. To preserve our culture and our individual selves, we must make an effort to keep our personal memories alive.

Outsourcing Memories to Machines: The Unseen Perils of a Digitally Dependent Society

In the 1960s, MIT computer scientist Joseph Weizenbaum created a software application that transformed written language into seemingly responsive sentences, giving the illusion of conversation. This software, named ELIZA, gained popularity and even sparked discussions about its potential as a therapeutic tool. 

However, Weizenbaum noted that the more people interacted with ELIZA, the more they were convinced the program really understood them, despite knowing it was merely a computer program. This phenomenon highlighted the ease of human-computer integration and raised concerns about the potential loss of our humanness as we delegate more mental activities to computers.

On a similar note, a study by Dutch psychologist Christof van Nimwegen found that participants using less helpful software demonstrated better problem-solving skills and knowledge retention than those using more user-friendly software. This suggests that while we may prefer software that does more work for us, we could be diminishing our own cognitive abilities in the process.

Finally, research from the University of Michigan revealed that spending time in nature greatly improves cognitive functioning. However, with the constant stream of stimuli provided by the internet, we may be losing access to this mental restoration.

In essence, as we become more intertwined with our digital tools, we risk losing our capacity for deep thinking, empathy, and compassion. While we are indeed adapting to our new information environment, it's crucial to consider what we might be sacrificing in the process.
