We are now in the second half of the chessboard, where what's come before is no longer a reliable guide to what will happen next. The Gross National Product doesn't account for the intangible aspects that make life worthwhile. The economy is changing and our metrics need to adapt. 

As we transition into the second machine age, we value ideas over physical goods. The irony of the information age is that we often know less about the sources of economic value than we did fifty years ago. We fail to see the huge layer of the economy unseen in official data, which includes free digital goods, the sharing economy, intangibles and changes in our relationships.

Music's shift from physical media to digital files is a good example of this unaccounted economic activity. Physical media sales declined, but total units of music purchased grew due to an increase in digital downloads. Even though the value of music hasn't changed, the price has. 

The GDP, even if perfectly measured, doesn't quantify our welfare. It's important to consider the changes in the goods and services we consume. Today, children with smartphones have access to more information in real time than the US president had twenty years ago. 

The proliferation of free products even pushes GDP downwards. A switch to free services can make billions of dollars disappear from companies’ revenues and the GDP statistics. 

In addition, our economic welfare is only loosely related to GDP. Due to the increasing volume of digital goods introduced each year, the traditional GDP heuristic is becoming less useful. 

The challenge is to measure the benefits of free goods or services that were unavailable at any price in previous eras. We need to take into account the consumer surplus generated by goods and services. However, measuring the consumer surplus is extremely difficult.

While advances in technology are creating unprecedented wealth, there's no economic law that says all workers will benefit from these advances. For almost two hundred years, wages did increase alongside productivity. But more recently, median wages have stopped tracking productivity growth. 

Digital technologies are driving an unprecedented reallocation of wealth and income. They can replicate valuable ideas and innovations at very low cost, creating value for society and wealth for innovators, but diminishing the demand for previously important types of labor. 

These structural economic changes have created three overlapping pairs of winners and losers. The first two sets of winners are those who have accumulated significant quantities of capital assets, either nonhuman or human. The third group of winners is made up of the superstars among us who have special talents or luck. 

The shift from labor to capital is in part the consequence of two trends: fewer people are working, and wages for those who are working are lower than before. As a result, while labor compensation and productivity in the past rose in tandem, in recent years a growing gap has opened.

It also involves a significant shift in the distribution of income, where the top 0.01 percent now get a bigger share of the top 1 percent of income than the top 1 percent get of the whole economy. This shift suggests that in the future, the rich will continue to get richer while the poor will continue to struggle. 

The impact of this shift isn't just economic. It also affects the social fabric of society, leading to decreased social mobility and increasing the likelihood of creating extractive institutions that slow down economic progress. As such, while technology brings great bounty, it also generates significant spread, creating both winners and losers in the process.

Research suggests that as technology continues to advance, the question of what human skills will remain valuable becomes increasingly pertinent. Despite the rapid development of technology, there are areas where humans continue to hold an advantage over digital machines. This is because humans and computers approach tasks differently. In the world of work, this difference means that even as technology advances, human skills and abilities remain crucial. We've never seen a truly creative, entrepreneurial or innovative machine. People who are good at idea creation will continue to be in demand. Similarly, human sensory abilities, such as vision, hearing and touch, surpass their digital equivalents, making humans more adaptable in changing environments. 

However, these skills of ideation, pattern recognition, and complex communication are not emphasized in most educational environments today. Instead, rote memorization of facts and traditional academic skills are prioritized. This is where technology can play a transformative role. Online resources and self-organized learning environments can help develop these critical skills in students. 

Unfortunately, acquiring a good education is becoming more expensive, leading to a rise in student debts. This is where online education and massive online open courses (MOOCs) can provide a lower-cost alternative. 

In essence, while we can't say for certain what the future holds, it's crucial for individuals to be adaptable, flexible, and ready to seize new opportunities where humans and machines can work together. It's also important to remember that as digital and technological innovations continue to surprise us, one should never say never about the possibilities of the future.

3. Job Matching: Enhancing platforms like LinkedIn and developing sophisticated algorithms can bridge the gap between job seekers and employers, reducing friction in the labor market. Innovative tools that assess candidate skills beyond traditional resumes can improve job placement efficiency.

4. Support for Science: Federal funding for basic research is crucial. Innovations like the internet and GPS originated from government-sponsored research. Continued support and reformed intellectual property regimes can sustain technological progress.

These aren't the humanoid robots of sci-fi movies but increasingly skilled and capable machines steadily replacing human labor. But what should we do about this? 

Trying to halt technological progress is not the answer. Instead, we need to let the technologies of the second machine age do their work and find ways to deal with the challenges they bring. 

One proposal is the basic income scheme, where the government distributes equal money to everyone in the country each year, without evaluating who needs the money or who should get more or less. This assures a minimum standard of living and preserves the elements of capitalism that work well. 

However, as Voltaire observed, work saves a man from three great evils: boredom, vice, and need. A guaranteed income addresses need but not boredom or vice. It's important for people to work not just for money, but also for self-worth, community, engagement, values, structure, and dignity.

Instead of a basic income, a negative income tax could be a better solution. It combines a guaranteed minimum income with an incentive to work. Every dollar earned still increases total income. We also need to reduce burdens and mandates on employers to encourage employment. However, this is easier said than done. We need to find alternative ways to fund important programs like Social Security and Medicare. 

The peer economy, a system where people satisfy their customers' requests by crowdsourcing them, offers new economic opportunities and something to do. It addresses all three of Voltaire’s evils and should be encouraged. 

Looking into the future, we face challenges such as the risk of system accidents due to our complex and tightly coupled technological infrastructure, the threat of destructive forces that affect the entire planet, and the potential loss of freedom and control of information. The ultimate challenge is the development of fully conscious machines. However, we are optimistic. The future we get will depend on the choices we make. Technology is not destiny. We shape our destiny.
