Inspired, Gary's team worked to get legal recognition for the village, unlocking government services, including schools. Soon, Sona and her peers donned uniforms, held books, and attended classes. In Mexico, a program called Oportunidades paid families to send their children, especially girls, to school, resulting in increased school attendance and higher education levels for girls. In Bangladesh, the BRAC organization built schools with flexible schedules and free materials, overcoming cultural resistance to girls' education.

One particularly inspiring story is that of Kakenya Ntaiya, a Maasai girl who negotiated with her father to stay in school in exchange for undergoing a traditional rite of passage. Her determination led her to earn a PhD and return to her village to build a school for girls, challenging and changing centuries-old customs.

This story opened Melinda's eyes to the widespread issue of unpaid work, largely shouldered by women, especially in poorer countries. Women worldwide spend twice as much time as men on unpaid work. 

Unpaid work includes chores like cooking, cleaning, and childcare. Such tasks consume a woman's time, inhibiting her from pursuing an education or earning an income. This unequal division of labor blocks a woman's path to empowerment. 

Melinda experienced these burdens first-hand during her homestay with a family in Tanzania. There, she saw how the woman of the house, Anna, spent 17 hours a day performing household chores. She dreamed of starting a business but couldn't due to her duties. 

Melinda's journey towards an equal partnership with her husband, Bill Gates, was challenging. They debated about sharing unpaid work and the division of their roles at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. These discussions and experiences shaped their understanding of gender bias and the need for an equal partnership. 

Gender bias is often unconscious. Through exercises like role play, we can expose this bias and challenge it. Men sharing caregiving duties leads to happier relationships, children, and overall family life. 

Transforming a hierarchical relationship into an equal one requires women to assert themselves. It's about men and women coming together to end hierarchy, and creating a bond based on mutual support and solidarity. This is the path to true empowerment and equality.


Can Sharing Unpaid Work Pave the Way for Gender Equality?

On a visit to India, Melinda was introduced to the grim reality of child marriage. Arriving at a train station to meet a school head, Melinda found herself at a school that was held on the very platform. This platform school catered to homeless children who were often victims of abuse.

One incident that moved Melinda was when the school head rescued a girl who was about to be sold into prostitution by her husband. The girl, a child bride, had been given to her husband in a forced marriage. Her husband and his family were abusing her because her family couldn’t meet the dowry demands.

Child marriage is a blight on society, creating a power imbalance leading to inevitable abuse. In India, where dowries are still prevalent, younger and less educated girls often fetch lower dowries. The families receiving these girls don’t want educated, opinionated girls but obedient and defenseless servants.

Child brides are often expected to take on household chores, and soon, motherhood. This burden of work, pregnancy, and childbirth has dire consequences. Melinda learned of this firsthand when she met Fati, a 16-year-old girl in Niger. Married at 13, she suffered a fistula due to a long and obstructed labor, leading to her ostracization by her husband.

The plight of these girls moved Melinda to action. She met Mabel van Oranje, the wife of Prince Friso of the Netherlands, who had started an organization called Girls Not Brides to end child marriage. Mabel showed Melinda the connection between family planning and child marriage. Child brides are often under pressure to prove their fertility, leading to low contraceptive use and high mortality rates due to childbirth.

Melinda tried to understand the issue from a data perspective and found that child brides have higher rates of HIV, are more likely to be abused, have lower education levels, and have a greater age difference with their husbands, leading to more abuse.

Later, Melinda traveled to Ethiopia to meet child brides and people working to end this custom. The girls who had been married were soft-spoken and seemed defeated. The girls who were still in school, on the other hand, spoke louder and with confidence.

These experiences forced Melinda to question her role and rights as an outsider in supporting efforts to change these communities' cultures. She believes in universal values of human rights, equality, and the right to flourish. And when communities deny these rights to their women, she believes it's fair to join the fight for women.

Melinda supports the work of organizations like Tostan, which is working to change cultures from within, challenging social norms and promoting empathy. Through conversations about accepted practices, biases are revealed, and empathy is fostered. This leads to the understanding that everyone deserves to benefit from science and progress, regardless of their gender or status.

She did not own her land due to a traditional law that restricts women from inheriting property, and she had no say in family expenses, which often excluded farming supplies. Also, she had little time for farming or marketing her produce due to her household duties, and the seeds she had access to were not suitable for her needs.

However, things began to change when Patricia joined CARE Pathways, a program that not only shares farming tips but also educates about equality. Through a series of exercises, Patricia and her husband started understanding each other's roles better, leading to a more equal partnership. Patricia's husband started supporting her farming efforts, allowing them to invest in improved seeds and techniques, consequently increasing their farm output and income.

Patricia's story is not unique. Millions of women worldwide face similar challenges due to gender biases deeply ingrained in societies. Whether it's farming or any other sector, gender discrimination holds back women's potential and hinders overall economic growth. This discrimination is also often encoded in laws, restricting women from certain jobs, limiting their work hours, and controlling their financial freedom.

Even religion, humanity’s oldest institution, plays a part in perpetuating gender biases. Male-dominant interpretations of holy scriptures often result in laws and customs that suppress women. To challenge this, it's essential to have women's voices in religious leadership, shifting the balance of power. However, women cannot do this alone; they need male allies who can advocate for change from within these institutions.

Can Challenging Gender Biases in Farming and Religion Empower Millions of Women Worldwide?

Melinda Gates discusses the importance of gender equality, particularly in the workplace. She shares her personal experiences as a woman in the tech industry, recalling pivotal moments and figures in her career.

This sentiment resonated deeply with Melinda, especially as she reflected on her foundation’s work, such as a trip to Thailand in 2001. There, she met a woman who candidly admitted she would become a sex worker to keep her children alive, highlighting the severe choices faced by those in marginalized communities.

Years later, Melinda's foundation launched Avahan, an HIV prevention program in India, which relied on the leadership of sex workers. This high-stakes initiative aimed to reduce unprotected sex between sex workers and their clients, a critical pathway for HIV transmission. However, it soon became clear that the program needed to address a more immediate concern: violence against sex workers.

The sex workers shared that preventing violence was their most urgent need, as fear of violence hindered their ability to insist on condom use. In response, Avahan set up a system where sex workers could call for help, and a group of women, along with a lawyer and media person, would rush to their aid. This approach dramatically reduced violence and empowered the women.

The foundation also established community centers where sex workers could gather, rest, and support each other. These centers became hubs of empowerment, fostering a strong sense of community and self-worth among the women. This collective strength enabled them to demand their rights and protect their lives, ultimately playing a crucial role in curbing the HIV epidemic in India.
