In 1968, Gates and Allen formed the Lakeside Programming Group, a geek's version of a gang that quickly morphed into a money-making business. They wrote the first job for a small time-sharing company, creating a payroll program that would produce paychecks with correct deductions and taxes. In the early 1980s, Richard Stallman, a hacker at MIT, began a mission to create an operating system that was free and completely nonproprietary. This led to the development of GNU, a UNIX-like operating system.
