In this dystopian vision, freedom is replaced by certainty: the best predictions are fed by totalities of data, leading to the creation of a market project aimed at fabricating predictions that become more valuable as they approach certainty. As a result, surveillance capitalists hijack the division of learning in society, creating a market net in which we are snared.

In this future, societal trust declines and surveillance capitalism flourishes. The state and the market become entangled, with the state depending on the market to access the power it seeks. As surveillance capitalism grows, so does instrumentarian power, replacing society with certainty. 

However, this future is not inevitable. A fork in the road lies ahead: one path leads to a dystopian future shaped by surveillance capitalism and instrumentarian power, while the other leads to a future where democratic institutions are strengthened and the digital is harnessed for genuinely productive, democratic purposes. The first step down this alternative path is to name and understand the unprecedented power that is surveillance capitalism and to resist its vision for our future.

Yet, this approach raises concerns about privacy and individual autonomy. Some, like MIT’s Alex Pentland, argue for a new deal on data that favors individual ownership of personal information, but does not question the ubiquitous data collection.

In the end, the vision of an instrumentarian society is one where behavior is tuned for the greater good, plans replace politics, social pressure ensures harmony, and individuality is rendered obsolete.
