Frisbee’s advice was to get accountant certification (CPA) to secure a stable income base. Knight grudgingly enrolled in accounting classes at Portland State.

After earning the necessary credits, Knight joined accounting firm Lybrand, Ross Bros. & Montgomery. The work was intense, and the workload heavy, especially after President Kennedy’s assassination, when his boss denied him a day off to mourn. Knight's consolation was his new car, Plymouth Valiant in sea-foam green, which his friends called "vomit green."

In early 1964, the long-awaited shoes arrived—beautiful, white with blue stripes. Knight sent a couple of pairs to his old track coach, Bill Bowerman, who had a passion for shoe design. To Knight's surprise, Bowerman proposed a partnership. They met Bowerman's lawyer, John Jaqua, and agreed on a 51-49 split, giving Knight control.
