Even with our modern advancements, over 90% of the calories that feed humanity come from the plants that our ancestors domesticated between 9500 and 3500 B.C – wheat, rice, maize, potatoes, millet, and barley.

Despite the benefits it brought, the Agricultural Revolution was a double-edged sword. It meant more food, but it also meant more work and often a worse diet. It led to population explosions and the emergence of elites. In essence, the Agricultural Revolution was history’s biggest fraud, with the hard work of farmers benefitting a few at the top.

However, despite the challenges it brought, the Agricultural Revolution was a necessary step in human history. It allowed for the development of complex societies and civilizations, and ultimately laid the groundwork for the world as we know it today.

Was the Agricultural Revolution a Blessing or a Curse for Humanity?

Our history has been shaped by an intricate web of social constructs, imagined hierarchies, and shared myths that have defined our societies, relationships, and identities. These constructs are not rooted in biology or nature, but are products of our human imagination and circumstances. At the core of these are the concepts of 'man' and 'woman', 'superiors' and 'inferiors', which have formed the basis of widespread discrimination and inequality. 

For instance, the idea of 'race' was used in America to justify slavery and segregation, with the 'white' race seen as superior. In India, the caste system, supposedly ordained by the gods, determined one’s occupation and social standing, even influencing who one could marry. Meanwhile, the notion of 'gender' has been one of the most influential and stable social hierarchies, with men almost always seen as superior to women. 

However, these imagined hierarchies are not rooted in biology. Biology simply enables certain possibilities, while culture dictates what is forbidden. The distinction between 'man' and 'woman' is more societal than biological. While biology differentiates males and females, the roles, rights, and duties of 'men' and 'women' are largely determined by societal norms, not biological facts.

Various theories have attempted to explain why men have traditionally been valued more than women. Some argue men's physical strength has allowed them to enforce dominance, while others suggest men's alleged aggression has given them control of military forces, thus increasing their societal power. Yet, as history has shown, physical strength does not equate to societal power and aggression does not necessarily lead to leadership.

In recent years, we've seen dramatic shifts in these traditional roles and hierarchies. Women have gained equal legal status, political rights, and economic opportunities in many societies. The concept of gender itself is being rethought, with increasing recognition of non-binary and transgender identities. Despite these advances, the remnants of these imagined hierarchies still influence our societies today. Understanding this can help us challenge these outdated constructs and work towards more equitable societies.

Imagined Hierarchies: The Power of Social Constructs in Shaping Our Societies

While the rise of human societies has led to more complexity and diversity, it has also seen the development of shared constructs and systems. These "artificial instincts," or culture, have allowed us to cooperate on a large scale. However, cultures are not static; they are fluid and constantly undergoing internal and external changes. 

For instance, in medieval Europe, the contradiction between Christian and chivalric ideals led to changes in the culture, spawning the Crusades, military orders, and medieval art and literature. This dynamic is also evident in the modern political order with the contradiction between equality and individual freedom.

The process of reconciling these contradictions is a key driver of cultural change. It's called cognitive dissonance and it is a vital asset for establishing and maintaining any human culture. 

But do these fluctuations occur randomly or is there a pattern? A cosmic viewpoint reveals a clear direction towards unity throughout history. Over the millennia, smaller cultures have gradually merged into larger, more complex civilizations, decreasing the number of distinct human worlds. 

This unification process has been accelerated by the development of money as a universal medium of exchange. Money enables people to convert almost anything into anything else, to store wealth conveniently, and to transport it easily. However, this also comes with a dark side as it can erode local traditions, intimate relations, and human values. 

The role of empires in history is also significant. Empires have often been responsible for amalgamating small cultures into larger ones, spreading ideas, goods, and technology more easily within their borders. However, this process of cultural assimilation has often been painful and traumatic. Despite this, the legacy of empires is embedded in most of today's cultures. Even movements that seek to reject the legacy of empires are, in reality, often defending the legacy of older empires.

As we move into the future, we might be heading towards a global empire, driven by the collapse of nationalism and the rise of issues that require global cooperation, such as climate change. However, this new empire won't be ruled by a particular state or ethnic group, but by a multi-ethnic elite held together by a common culture and shared interests. 

Are We Heading Towards a Global Empire Driven by Cultural Evolution?

In the medieval market of Samarkand, a city in Central Asia, the unification of humankind was an everyday fact. Here, Syrian merchants traded Chinese silks, tribesmen from the steppes sold slaves, and shopkeepers collected gold coins from far-off lands. Similar unification was seen in the military of Kublai Khan in 1281, as soldiers from diverse backgrounds obeyed a single emperor. 

Religion also played a huge role in the unification of humankind. Had you been a pilgrim to Mecca in 1300, you would have encountered a diverse group of worshippers, all united in their belief in a higher power. Despite the current perception of religion as a source of disagreement and division, it has historically been a unifier. Religions assert that our laws aren't human inventions, but divine orders, which helps establish social stability. 

However, not all religions have fulfilled this unifying potential. For a religion to unify a large territory inhabited by different groups, it must espouse a universal belief and insist on spreading it. This is seen in Buddhism which is universal and missionary. 

Over time, polytheistic religions gave way to monotheistic ones, which believe in a single, omnipotent God. Some of these monotheistic religions, such as Christianity and Islam, became very influential. However, they didn't completely rid themselves of polytheistic elements. Many believers in monotheistic religions also believe in other divine beings, such as saints or angels. 

Humanism is another significant belief system where humans are seen as sacred. While there are different types of humanism, they all focus on the belief that humans have a unique and sacred nature. 

The unification of humankind has been achieved through various means, including commerce, empires, and religion. However, the specific paths taken by history were not predetermined or inevitable, but were the result of complex interactions and choices. As we continue to study history, we should not assume that the paths we've taken were always for the best or that they were the only ones available.

Unraveling the Threads of Unity: The Role of Commerce, Empires, and Religion in the Unification of Humankind

Science and empire were intricately linked, as the thirst for knowledge and the drive to conquer fed off one another. 

The Scientific Revolution and the Age of Discovery were intertwined, with both scientists and conquerors admitting their ignorance about the world and yearning to explore and master the unknown. This mentality is reflected in the development of world maps, which, for the first time in the fifteenth century, included empty spaces representing the unknown.

The European empires were unique in their approach to conquest, which was not just about expanding territory but also about gaining knowledge. This commitment to exploration and knowledge gave them an edge over other civilizations. For example, when the British conquered India, they did not just take control of the land, but also studied its history, culture, and natural resources. This knowledge gave them a significant advantage in managing and exploiting their colonies.

Scientific research was often financed by political, economic and religious interests. These interests were not only interested in gaining new knowledge for its own sake, but also in using that knowledge to further their own agendas. 

For instance, the British government funded the Great Survey of India, a massive project to map the entire country, because it would help them to govern more effectively.

The partnership between science and empire also had darker implications. Science was used to provide ideological justification for colonialism, with scientists claiming that Europeans were biologically superior to other races. This belief was used to justify the conquest and exploitation of other peoples. 

However, in the present day, the legacy of the European empires is not just one of exploitation and oppression. The scientific advances and wealth generated by these empires have shaped the world as we know it. The world today is largely a product of the scientific and capitalist ethos that was born in Europe during the Age of Discovery and the Scientific Revolution.

The story of science and empire is a reminder of the complex interplay between knowledge, power, and ideology. It shows that scientific progress is not just a matter of individual genius, but also of social, political, and economic forces. And it suggests that the pursuit of knowledge can be a double-edged sword, capable of both advancing civilization and justifying oppression.

Did the European Empires Use Science as a Tool for Conquest and Justification for Colonialism?

Money is the lifeblood of our modern world, driving both the building of empires and the advance of science. But the real motor behind our economic history is growth. From the founding of states to the destruction of species, for better or worse, our economy has been growing like a hormone-fueled teenager. 

Let's consider an example: Samuel Greedy, a shrewd financier, founds a bank. A. A. Stone, a contractor, deposits a million dollars in the bank. Jane McDoughnut, an aspiring baker, borrows that million to start a bakery. She pays Stone to build it, who then deposits the money back in the bank. It creates a cycle where the money in the bank increases, even though the physical cash stays the same. 

This cycle is the basis of banking, but it also resembles a Ponzi scheme. If everyone demanded their money back at once, the bank would collapse. However, it's not a fraud; it's a testament to our trust in the future and the potential for growth. 

But growth doesn't just rely on trust and capital. It also requires raw materials and energy. Throughout history, we've seen over and over that there's no real limit to the energy available to us. We just need to invent better ways to harness it. Solar energy, nuclear energy, gravitational energy – the possibilities are vast. 

Moreover, with the growth of our knowledge, we've been able to create entirely new materials, like plastic and aluminum, and tap into previously inaccessible supplies of raw materials. 

So, what's the catch? The modern capitalist economy must constantly increase production to survive. If we don't keep buying and consuming more, the system will collapse. That's where consumerism comes in: it encourages us to treat ourselves, to indulge, to consume more and more. 

But while we're busy shopping, who's going to pay for all this growth? The capitalist and consumerist ethics are two sides of the same coin: the rich invest, and the masses buy. It's a neat division of labor that keeps the wheels of our economy spinning. 

But can the economic pie keep growing indefinitely? Can we keep finding new energy sources, inventing new materials, and consuming more? The answer lies in our future. For now, though, as consumers, we're doing exactly what the capitalist-consumerist ethic asks of us: we're buying. As long as we keep doing that, the wheels of industry will keep turning. 

Capitalist-Consumerist Ethic: The Fuel Behind Our Ever-Growing Economy

In the last 500 years, we've seen the earth united into a single ecosystem, economies growing exponentially, and humans gaining superhuman powers through science and technology. We've transformed society, politics, daily life, and even human psychology. But are we happier? Can we say we've improved our collective happiness?

Buddhism suggests that happiness is not about feeling good, but about experiencing life as meaningful and worthwhile. It's not about chasing fleeting moments of joy, but about realizing the impermanence of all feelings and letting go of our constant craving for them. 

In contrast, the liberal view suggests that happiness is about fulfilling our subjective feelings and desires. If we can align our personal delusions of meaning with society's collective ones, we might be able to convince ourselves that our lives are meaningful and find happiness in that.

But if happiness is about manipulating our biochemistry, then perhaps we're on the path to a dystopian future where happiness is engineered. If we can use science to adjust our serotonin, dopamine, and oxytocin levels, then we could potentially make people happier than ever before. 

But is this true happiness? Is it sustainable? Or are we simply creating a society of self-deluded individuals chasing fleeting moments of joy? These are questions we need to ask ourselves as we continue to advance and evolve as a species. 

So, how do we measure happiness throughout history? Most history books focus on the achievements of great thinkers, warriors, saints, and artists. They tell us about the rise and fall of empires, the discovery of new technologies, and the evolution of social structures. But they don't tell us about how these events impacted individual happiness. 

Perhaps it's time we started filling in these gaps in our understanding of history. Because understanding how our ancestors found happiness could provide valuable insights into how we can find it today.

Are We Truly Happier Today? A Deep Dive into the Evolution of Happiness and Its Implications for Our Future

Take bio-artist, Eduardo Kac, who engineered a fluorescent green rabbit in 2000. This wasn't a product of nature, but of intelligent design. The rabbit, Alba, is a sign of what's to come. We're on the brink of the most significant biological revolution since life appeared on earth.

What does this mean for us? Well, imagine if we could engineer genes not only in animals, but humans too. What if we could create super-humans or even resurrect extinct species like the Neanderthals? Sounds like science fiction, doesn't it? Yet, we're closer than you might think. 

But it's not just about biological engineering. We're also heading into the era of cyborg engineering, where we combine organic and inorganic parts. Just think about the bionic arms that can be operated by thought alone or the cyborg insects developed by the US military. We're becoming more machine than man.

And then there's the possibility of inorganic life. We're talking about computer programs and viruses that can undergo independent evolution. Imagine creating a program that can learn and evolve entirely independently of its creator. It's a new form of life, completely independent of organic evolution.

The implications are mind-boggling and raise a host of ethical, political, and ideological questions. What happens when we can manipulate our own DNA? Will there be a new superhuman elite? How will laws and social structures adapt to this new reality? And more importantly, what do we want to become?

The future is unknown. Maybe we'll achieve immortality by 2050, or maybe we'll have transformed into something completely different. But one thing is certain: we're on the brink of a revolution. We're not just changing the world around us; we're changing ourselves. And we need to start thinking about what we want that change to look like.
