Here's the thing - there's no such thing as a 'neutral' design. The design and placement of things can greatly influence people's behavior. For example, placing fruits at eye level in a cafeteria can make kids choose them over junk food.

We also have two types of thinking - intuitive and automatic, and reflective and rational. The automatic system is rapid and instinctive, while the reflective system is deliberate and self-conscious. This distinction helps us understand why we can be ingenious at some tasks and clueless at others. 

And then there are our biases. Anchoring, availability, and representativeness are three common biases that can influence our decisions. For example, when we estimate the population of a city, we usually start with a number we know and adjust from there - that's anchoring. Or we assess the likelihood of risks based on how easily examples come to mind - that's the availability bias. And when we categorize things based on how similar they are to our stereotype of that category - that's representativeness. 

But here's the catch - we can often be overconfident and optimistic in our self-assessment, believing we are better than average or less likely to experience negative events. This can lead to risky behaviors, like not taking preventive steps or overspending. 

And then there's the impact of framing - how information is presented can significantly influence our decisions. Think about how doctors present the risks and benefits of a procedure.

For example, setting the default option in a situation can act as a powerful nudge, influencing our choices. We also use mental accounting, like setting different budgets for different activities, to manage our behaviors.

So now the main question is: Why do humans easily get nudged by other humans? The answer is simple: We like to conform. In the 1950s, social psychologist Solomon Asch conducted a series of experiments demonstrating how people conform to group opinions. If everyone gave an incorrect answer, people erred more than a third of the time. 

In another experiment, psychologist Muzafer Sherif showed how group norms quickly develop and remain stable. An arbitrary "tradition" can become entrenched over time, leading to "collective conservatism" where groups stick to established patterns. 

Sometimes, we follow a practice not because we like it, but because we think most other people like it. This leads to "pluralistic ignorance", where many social practices persist because people are unaware of others' dislike for them. 

The takeaway is that humans are easily influenced by others, and this can be used to nudge them towards positive outcomes. But what happens when we don't have a clear understanding of the potential outcomes of our choices?

Once a professor named Thaler observed his students' behavior as they tried to leave the classroom early. The students faced a dilemma at the large double door at the front of the room. 

The door had large wooden handles that instinctively signaled to pull, but the door actually opened outward, meaning they had to push. Despite being informed about this, most students kept pulling the door. This highlighted how often people follow their automatic instincts, even when they're not the most effective response.

This concept is called ‘stimulus response compatibility’. It implies that the signal you receive should be consistent with the desired action. When there are inconsistencies, as with the classroom door, performance suffers. 

A popular experiment that demonstrates this principle is the Stroop test. In this test, people have to press a button corresponding to the color of a word displayed on a screen. The task becomes difficult when the color and the word don’t match, like the word 'green' displayed in red. This is because our automatic system reads the word faster than our color naming system can decide the color of the text.

The design of everyday objects often doesn't take into account basic principles of human psychology, leading to products with 'bad architecture'. For instance, the design of a basic four-burner stove often confuses users about which knob controls which burner. Similarly, the design of television remote controls often places less important buttons at the same size as the most used ones, leading to accidental presses and confusion.

There are ways to improve this, such as 'choice architecture’, where the choices people make are indirectly influenced. For instance, setting a default option that will obtain if the chooser does nothing can lead many people to end up with that option, even if it isn't the best for them. 

Another strategy is providing immediate feedback. Digital cameras, for example, allow users to see a small version of the image immediately after capturing it, helping them avoid mistakes like forgetting to remove the lens cap or cutting off the subject's head. 

Understanding 'mappings', or the relation between choice and welfare, is another essential part of good choice architecture. For instance, instead of listing the megapixels of a digital camera, manufacturers could list the largest print size recommended for that camera, making the choice easier for consumers. 

Finally, incentives play a crucial role in choice architecture. When people realize the costs of their choices, they're more likely to make better ones. But to make this work, the incentives must be noticeable or 'salient'. For instance, displaying the running costs of long-distance phone calls or the cost per hour of lowering the thermostat can greatly influence people's behavior and choices.

So, good choice architecture involves understanding incentives, creating clear mappings, setting effective defaults, providing immediate feedback, anticipating error, and simplifying complex choices. These principles can help design systems that reflect a good understanding of how humans behave, ensuring that our automatic systems don't get all confused.

Let's discuss student loans. With rising college costs, around two-thirds of four-year college students are in debt when they graduate. The process of securing these loans is as complex as getting a mortgage, with hundreds of questions to answer. So, how do we nudge people towards smarter borrowing? For mortgages, we could encourage a simplified way of reporting lending costs. This would allow borrowers to compare loans easily. For student loans, simplifying the financial aid application would encourage more students to apply for aid and avoid expensive private loans. As for credit cards, companies should be required to send an annual statement detailing all the fees incurred over the year. This would make the costs more salient to users, helping them understand what they're paying for.

We all know borrowing can be a slippery slope. The key is to make the process simpler, more transparent, and less intimidating. This way, we can help people make smarter choices and avoid the pitfalls of debt. After all, who wants to end up like Homer Simpson, blissfully ignorant of the financial trap he’s walked into?

During the 2000 presidential campaign, the issue of prescription drug coverage was a hot topic. Can George W. Bush's Prescription Drug Coverage Plan be Refined to Better Serve America's Seniors?

In 1944, Franklin Delano Roosevelt proposed “the right to a good education” in his Second Bill of Rights. Today, the majority of Americans agree that children should have access to quality education. However, the consensus dissipates when it comes to how this right should be achieved. 

The concept of school choice, popularized by economist Milton Friedman, remains a contentious issue. Friedman argues that competition among schools could improve the quality of education. To this end, he advocates for the introduction of a voucher system where parents can send their children to any school they want, thus levelling the playing field. This approach would also benefit the least advantaged, as wealthy families already have the option to send their children to private schools through their own means.

However, critics argue that school choice undermines public schools, which are key to America’s success. They worry that it will lead to a siphoning off of resources from public schools to private ones, leaving public schools with students that private schools reject. 

So what happens when cities experiment with school choice programs? Economist Carolyn Hoxby found that competition does indeed improve student performance. Public schools produce higher student achievement per dollar spent when faced with competition. However, the system isn't perfect. Many parents don't know their options or how to make good choices for their children's education.

Take for example Worcester, Massachusetts, where despite the availability of choice programs, the majority of parents did not utilize these options due to a lack of information and discouraging tactics from the school system. In contrast, in Charlotte, North Carolina, an experiment was conducted where parents were given a simplified "fact sheet" about the schools, leading to them choosing better schools for their children.

So how can we help parents and students make better choices? The first step is to improve access to and the presentation of information. The process must also be simplified and made less intimidating. For instance, in Texas, a simple nudge was introduced to encourage more students to consider college. To graduate from San Marcos High, a student would have to complete an application to nearby Austin Community College. This resulted in a significant increase in the number of students who went on to college.

Education is a complex issue with no one-size-fits-all solution. However, by focusing on choice, competition, and clarity, we can ensure that every child has the opportunity to access quality education. Can we continue to improve and innovate the system for the better? The answer is yes, and the journey continues.
