While these predictions might seem far-fetched now, they're based on current trends and the trajectory of human development. If these predictions make us rethink our future and make different choices, then their purpose has been served. The goal of studying history is not to predict the future accurately but to free ourselves from the past and imagine alternative destinies.

Our impact rivals that of ice ages and tectonic shifts, and soon, perhaps even that of the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs. 

Our ancestors, as they spread across the globe, broke down ecological barriers, leading to extinctions and the creation of a unified ecological unit—our planet. With our planes, ships, and cargo, we've reshuffled the ecological deck, often with little regard for the consequences.

With the rise of science and humanism, humans began to see themselves as the sole agents in the universe, negotiating with no one, acquiring power without obligation. The Agricultural Revolution had given rise to theist religions, but the Scientific Revolution led to humanist religions, where humans replaced gods. This shift justified modern industrial farming in the name of Man, often at great cost to animals.

As we continue to advance, we must ask ourselves difficult questions. What makes us so special? With artificial intelligence on the rise, could we find ourselves on the other side of exploitation? And what does the future hold for relations between humans and potential superhumans?

Similarly, future generations might see our belief in democracy and human rights as incomprehensible. 

So, if our shared stories give our lives meaning, what happens when those stories change or disappear? That's the power of history. It shows us how these webs of meaning are constantly being spun and unravelled. Our current beliefs and values might seem unshakeable now, but history could change that. 

And as we move into the future, we might see the lines between history and biology blur. As our imagined realities start to rewrite our DNA, our objective reality could be swallowed up by our intersubjective one. This might make fiction the most powerful force on earth, more potent than natural selection or even asteroids. 

So, if we want to understand our future, we need to do more than study genetics or crunch numbers. We need to understand the stories we tell ourselves. Because it's these stories, these imagined realities, that truly shape our world.

Or Pharaoh-ruled Egypt, where the king was perceived as a living god, and the bureaucracy ran the kingdom in his name. The invention of writing and money in Sumeria allowed for more efficient bureaucracy, tax collection, and the establishment of vast kingdoms. 

However, these systems served fictional aims and interests. For instance, Pharaoh's officials might have been able to construct impressive pyramids and canals, but did this actually improve the quality of life for the average person? The answer is not necessarily positive. In fact, the life of a peasant in ancient Egypt was full of hardship and misery.

As we developed more sophisticated understandings of our world, we built systems of cooperation around these shared fictions. While these systems may seem successful when judged by their own invented standards, it's important to occasionally step back and consider them from the perspective of real entities. After all, while a corporation, a nation, or a religion can't suffer, the individuals within them certainly can.

Remember, these shared stories and systems are just tools. They were invented to serve us, not the other way around. We must strive to distinguish fiction from reality, remembering that while our invented stories are crucial for societal function, they should never become our ultimate goals or yardsticks for success. Let's not lose touch with reality, sacrificing our lives in service of fictions.

From Sumeria to Silicon: The Power and Pitfalls of Societal Fictions

Stories have always been the foundation of human societies, from stories of gods to nations and corporations. These stories often dominated objective reality and were accepted as truth. 

In modern society, we've seen a shift from these traditional myths, leaning more towards objective scientific theories. Science and religion are often seen as enemies, but in reality, they've formed an alliance. This alliance has given birth to the modern world, a world driven by the desire for more. 

Modern life is a constant pursuit of power within a universe devoid of meaning. We find ourselves locked in a double race. On one hand, we feel compelled to speed up the pace of scientific progress and economic growth. But simultaneously, we need to stay ahead of ecological Armageddon. This race creates huge problems on both individual and collective levels. 

On the individual level, it results in high levels of stress and tension. On the collective level, the race manifests itself in ceaseless upheavals. The modern world requires uncertainty and disturbance. It's not easy to live in such a chaotic world, and it's even harder to govern it. 

Despite the tension and chaos, modernity upholds growth as a supreme value. On the collective level, growth is vital for three principal reasons: it raises our standard of living, it's necessary to maintain where we are, and it's the key to improving the lives of the poor. However, the race for growth has its downsides. Ecological collapse is the real nemesis of the modern economy. Our constant pursuit of growth and progress could ultimately lead to our downfall. 

So where does this leave us? Is it possible to find a balance between constant growth and the wellbeing of our planet? The answers to these questions are far from simple, but they're crucial if we want to ensure the survival of our species and our world. 

Are Our Beliefs in Science, Religion and Capitalism Shaping or Damaging Our Modern Society?

The modern world is shaped by humanism, a belief that focuses on the importance of individual experience, feelings, and desires. This necessitates the exploration of the history and different branches of humanism: liberal humanism, socialist humanism, and evolutionary humanism. 

Liberal humanism, the "orthodox" branch, champions the uniqueness and freedom of the individual. Socialist humanism, in contrast, emphasizes the collective and the impact of actions on the wider society. Evolutionary humanism, the most radical branch, believes in the survival of the fittest humans, justifying oppression and inequality. 

Humanism has been a driving force of artistic, economic, and political change. It has encouraged the exploration of new ideas and experiences. However, humanism has also been the catalyst for violent ideological conflicts. In the 20th century, socialism and evolutionary humanism challenged liberal humanism. Despite these challenges, liberal humanism emerged victorious, but its success may contain the seeds of its downfall. 

As we strive to attain immortality, bliss, and divinity, the very technologies we develop could disrupt the foundations of humanism. Advances in genetics and artificial intelligence could make us question the nature of free choice and the uniqueness of human experience. The human experience could become a commodity, a product that can be manipulated and designed.

Our world is heavily reliant on the liberal principles of individualism, human rights, democracy, and the free market. Yet, as science continues to progress, these principles are being challenged.

Seventy thousand years ago, the Cognitive Revolution transformed an unassuming African ape into the ruler of the world. Techno-humanism suggests that a few more tweaks to our genome and brain could launch a second Cognitive Revolution. The first revolution gave us access to the intersubjective realm, turning us into rulers of the planet; a second revolution might give us access to unimaginable new realms and turn us into lords of the galaxy.

However, as we aim to upgrade our minds, we risk losing the very essence of what makes us human. 

Our mind is like an island of consciousness within a vast ocean of alien mental states. The spectrum of possible mental states may be infinite, but science has only studied a tiny fraction of it. For centuries, our society has shaped our minds according to its needs, neglecting certain skills and abilities. As technology allows us to manipulate our inner voices and desires, we risk losing our sense of self. 

In the future, technology might not just help us control our desires, but also design them. But if we can choose our desires, how can we possibly decide which ones to choose? This is the daunting challenge that techno-humanism faces. Meanwhile, dataism, a new religion that worships data over gods or man, is emerging. It envisions a world that does not revolve around human desires or experiences, but around information.
