Our closest living relatives are three species of great apes: the gorilla, the common chimpanzee, and the pygmy chimpanzee. Their confinement to Africa, along with abundant fossil evidence, suggests that the earliest stages of human evolution took place there, around 7 million years ago. 

Human history took a significant leap around 50,000 years ago, with the first signs of standardized stone tools and preserved jewelry. This period, referred to as the Great Leap Forward, saw similar developments appear in various regions around the world. However, the cause and geographic location of this leap remains a subject of debate among scientists.

Around 11,000 B.C., another significant shift occurred in human history - it was the beginning of village life. The colonization of Australia and New Guinea marked the first major extension of human geographic range since our ancestors colonized Eurasia. The colonization of the Americas is believed to have occurred around 11,000 B.C, making North America and South America the continents with the shortest human prehistories. 

The question arises - did some continents have a clear advantage over others at this time? Could this advantage have led to the development and domination of certain societies over others?

An observer transported back in time to 11,000 B.C. would have found it impossible to predict which continent's society would develop most quickly. With hindsight, we now know that Eurasian societies developed quicker, but the reasons behind this rapid development were not straightforward.


Did Geographic Location Influence the Dominance of Certain Societies in Early Human History?

Centuries of peace came to a violent end for the Moriori people on the Chatham Islands in December 1835. A ship carrying 500 heavily armed Maori warriors arrived, soon followed by another ship with 400 more. These invaders declared the Moriori their slaves, killing any who resisted. 

Although the Moriori outnumbered the Maori two to one, their tradition of peaceful conflict resolution led them not to fight back but to offer friendship and a share of resources. Before they could make this offer, the Maori attacked, massacring hundreds, enslaving the survivors, and killing most of them over time.

The Moriori were a small, isolated group of hunter-gatherers with basic technology, while the Maori were part of a dense, war-prone farming society with advanced weapons and strong leadership. The Maori, hailing from New Zealand’s North Island, easily overpowered the Moriori.

Both groups had a common Polynesian origin less than a millennium earlier. The Maori developed complex farming and political systems, while the Moriori reverted to simpler, hunter-gatherer ways due to the Chatham Islands' cold climate, which was unsuitable for Maori crops. This stark divergence in development sealed the Moriori's fate when the two groups clashed.

This tragic story is not unique but a vivid example of how environment shapes societies. Going back to the 16th century, the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro led a small force of 168 men into the heart of the Inca Empire and captured its leader, Atahuallpa. This extraordinary event has been extensively studied by historians, who have identified several key factors that allowed Pizarro and his men to defeat an empire that was vastly superior in numbers.

One of the main factors was the Spaniards' superior military technology, including steel swords, guns, and horses. These gave Pizarro's men a significant advantage over the Inca's stone and bronze weapons. Additionally, the Spaniards were protected by steel armor, which was far more effective than the Incas' quilted armor.

Another crucial factor was the Inca Empire's lack of immunity to European diseases. An epidemic of smallpox had recently killed the Inca emperor and many of his court, causing a civil war that left the empire divided and vulnerable. Pizarro was able to exploit these divisions to his advantage.

The Incas also lacked the maritime technology and centralized political organization that allowed the Spaniards to travel across the Atlantic Ocean and maintain control over their distant colonies. Furthermore, the Incas did not have a written language, which meant that they could not record or learn from their history in the same way that the Spaniards could.

While these factors explain why Pizarro was able to capture Atahuallpa, they do not explain why Atahuallpa walked into what seems like an obvious trap. Historians believe that Atahuallpa's underestimation of the Spaniards' intentions and capabilities was largely due to his lack of exposure to other cultures and his lack of knowledge about the wider world. 

Nature's Role in War: Unraveling the Maori-Moriori Conflict and Spanish Conquistadors

For millions of years, humans were hunter-gatherers, but in the last 11,000 years, some societies transitioned to food production, domesticating wild animals and plants to establish farming and herding. This change led to greater food supplies, enabling denser populations, the development of settled communities, and the rise of complex societies. Yet, it occurred at different times in different regions, and some, like Aboriginal Australians, never adopted it at all.

The transition to farming and herding had massive implications. It led to increased food supply, which supported larger populations. It also gave birth to sedentary societies, enabling people to store food, create complex political structures, and develop technologies. These advancements, in turn, paved the way for some societies to conquer others. For example, Pizarro's capture of Atahuallpa was enabled by these developments.

Some regions independently developed food production by domesticating local plants and animals, such as Southwest Asia, China, Mesoamerica, the Andes, and eastern United States. Other areas primarily adopted food production from these pioneering regions. For instance, western and central Europe, the Indus Valley, and Egypt adopted farming and herding from Southwest Asia. 

In some cases, local hunter-gatherers adopted farming and herding from neighboring societies, like in the U.S. Southwest. In others, such as California, the Argentine pampas, Australia, Siberia, and the Cape of South Africa, farming was introduced by invading Europeans, leading to the displacement or death of local hunter-gatherers. 

Understanding these geographical differences in the onset of food production is crucial to understanding the distribution of power in human history. Those who had a head start in food production often ended up with the 'guns, germs, and steel,' conquering those who lagged behind in this transition.

Did the Transition to Farming and Herding Shape the Power Dynamics in Human History?

Before agriculture, everyone on earth was a hunter-gatherer. Around 8500 B.C., some groups transitioned to farming, starting in the Mediterranean habitats of the Fertile Crescent. But why did they make this switch and why did it take so long for other regions to follow suit? Contrary to popular belief, the hunter-gatherer lifestyle wasn't necessarily arduous or short-lived. In fact, time budget studies show that modern farmers may work more hours per day than hunter-gatherers did.

The shift to farming wasn't a conscious choice; it happened gradually as a result of decisions made without awareness of their consequences. For instance, some hunter-gatherers who had seen farming practiced by their neighbors chose not to adopt it. It wasn't until they saw the benefits of farming that they started to embrace it.

The transition from hunting-gathering to farming didn't always coincide with a shift from nomadism to sedentary living. Some modern nomads plant crops, leave to hunt, then return to check on and harvest their crops. Also, some hunter-gatherers intensively manage their land, promoting the growth of wild edible plants by clearing competing trees, for example.

Food production evolved step by step. Initially, people collected wild foods and cultivated them simultaneously. But as reliance on crops increased, food production systems evolved due to many separate decisions about allocating time and effort. This resulted in the development of technologies for collecting, processing, and storing wild foods, which eventually led to plant domestication.

One factor that tipped the balance towards farming was the decline in the availability of wild foods. As resources like large mammals became less abundant, food production became more appealing. 

Similarly, an increased availability of domesticable wild plants made plant domestication more rewarding. The cumulative development of technologies for handling food also played a role, as did the link between rising human population density and food production. 

Once food production had arisen in one part of a continent, neighboring hunter-gatherers could see the result and make a conscious decision to adopt it. However, the adoption process varied greatly. In some cases, it was rapid and complete, while in others, it was slow and piecemeal. 

Overall, the transition to farming involved a mixture of conscious and unconscious decisions, natural selection, and changes in lifestyle and environment. Despite the challenges and complexities, this transition was a crucial step in human civilization.

Unraveling the Mystery: The Gradual Transition from Hunter-Gatherer to Farming Societies

In various regions, people began to cultivate wild plants, radically transforming their lifestyles and future histories. However, agriculture didn't spring up independently in fertile areas like California, Europe, temperate Australia, and subequatorial Africa. Even within regions where it did, some areas saw agricultural development much earlier than others. Two main explanations arise: either cultural characteristics of local people or the availability of suitable wild plants.

On one hand, perhaps any well-watered temperate or tropical area could offer enough wild plant species for domestication. If so, cultural factors might explain why agriculture didn't develop in some regions. On the other hand, it might be that suitable wild plants were simply unavailable in certain areas, no matter how receptive the local humans were to experimentation.

Interestingly, domestication of large wild mammals, a critical aspect of agriculture, appears easier to understand. There are only about 148 species of large wild mammalian herbivores or omnivores, and just a few factors determine their suitability for domestication. Reviewing a region's big mammals can reveal whether the lack of domestication was due to unavailability of suitable species rather than local cultural factors.

This approach, however, is more challenging with plants. There are around 200,000 species of wild flowering plants, making it difficult to assess which might have been suitable for domestication in any given area. Still, we can infer that ancient peoples had already explored and domesticated almost all useful wild plants worth domesticating. This is evidenced by the fact that only a few hundred of these species have been domesticated, and a mere dozen account for over 80% of the world's crop tonnage today—mainly cereals, pulses, roots, and tubers.

However, certain failures to domesticate wild plants remain puzzling. For example, sorghum was domesticated in Africa's Sahel zone but not in southern Africa, where it also grew wild. Similarly, flax and einkorn wheat were domesticated in the Fertile Crescent but not in their wild ranges in western Europe and North Africa. These cases suggest that while suitable wild plants were available, other factors prevented their domestication.

One crucial factor in whether agriculture arose and developed was the suitability of the local flora. For instance, the Fertile Crescent had a high percentage of annual plants with big seeds, which were particularly easy to domesticate. Many of these plants were already abundant and highly productive in the wild, making them obvious choices for early farmers. Additionally, the Fertile Crescent's Mediterranean climate and diverse topography supported a wide range of wild plant and animal species suitable for domestication.

In contrast, regions like New Guinea and the eastern United States had fewer suitable wild plants and animals for domestication. In New Guinea, the lack of cereal crops and domesticable large mammals limited their agricultural development. Similarly, the eastern United States had a limited range of domesticable plants and no indigenous large domestic animals, which constrained their agricultural productivity compared to the Fertile Crescent.

Overall, the differences in the availability and suitability of wild plants and animals for domestication played a crucial role in the varying rates and developments of agriculture across different regions. This, in turn, influenced the rise of human technology, political organization, and ultimately, the fates of civilizations.

Why Did Agriculture Develop Differently Across the World: The Role of Local Flora and Fauna?

After tracing the origins of food production and its uneven spread across different regions, it's clear that geography played a significant role in the disparate degrees of power and affluence among various peoples. However, food production alone wasn't a direct cause of power. 

In a direct confrontation, a naked farmer would have no edge over a naked hunter-gatherer. The true advantage came from the denser populations that farming supported and the by-products of farming, such as germs, better weapons, technology, and centralized governments with literate elites capable of waging wars of conquest.

The link between farming and germs is particularly noteworthy. Throughout history, major killers like smallpox, flu, tuberculosis, malaria, plague, measles, and cholera have evolved from animal diseases. These germs have shaped human history, often deciding the outcomes of wars by decimating populations more effectively than weapons. For instance, during the European conquest of the Americas, Native American populations were ravaged by European germs, which were far more lethal than the conquerors' weapons.

The spread of these germs was largely one-sided, favoring Europeans. This imbalance raises questions: why didn't Native American diseases decimate the Spanish invaders? The answer lies in the origins of these germs. Most of the crowd diseases that plagued humanity evolved from pathogens transmitted from domesticated animals. In contrast, the Americas had far fewer domesticated animals, limiting the pool of potential germs. Only five animal species were domesticated in the Americas, compared to the numerous species in Eurasia.

Moreover, the rise of agriculture and the subsequent increase in human populations created conditions ripe for the spread of germs. Sedentary farming communities living amid their own waste provided a breeding ground for microbes. The development of cities and trade routes further facilitated the spread of diseases, turning human populations into giant breeding grounds for germs.

Interestingly, while Eurasian germs wreaked havoc in the New World, tropical regions like Africa and Southeast Asia harbored their own deadly diseases, posing significant challenges to European colonizers. Malaria, cholera, and yellow fever were formidable obstacles, delaying European colonization efforts. These diseases, much like the spread of written language, played a crucial role in shaping the interactions and development of societies.

Next, let's dive into the evolution of writing systems and their intrinsic connection to social, political, and economic structures. Three types of systems were developed, adopted and diffused: alphabets, logograms, and syllabaries.

The Sumerians of Mesopotamia and the Mexicans were the first to independently invent writing, using it primarily for administrative and bureaucratic purposes. The invention of writing was closely tied to the development of complex political institutions and agricultural societies, as it was used to record and manage resources.

However, writing was not developed or adopted by hunter-gatherer societies due to their lack of institutional use and inability to support the food surplus required to feed a class of professional scribes.

The evolution of writing systems often involved borrowing and adapting from existing systems. For instance, the Greeks borrowed from the Phoenician consonantal alphabet and improved it by inventing vowels.

Similarly, systems such as the Roman alphabet and the Korean Han'gul were developed by modifying existing systems to suit their own languages and cultures. The Cherokee syllabary, devised by Sequoyah, is a striking example of a writing system that was developed through idea diffusion rather than blueprint copying.

Despite the benefits of writing, many societies did not develop or adopt it. This includes some food-producing societies with complex political systems like the Inca Empire in South America and the chiefdoms of the Mississippi Valley. These societies were often geographically isolated from the first centres of writing, preventing them from acquiring writing or the idea of writing.

Germs, Agriculture, and Power: How Disease Shaped Human History and Conquest

On July 3, 1908, archaeologists discovered an intriguing artifact in the ancient Minoan palace at Phaistos, on the island of Crete. The object was a small clay disk, covered with a total of 241 signs or letters, divided neatly by etched lines, possibly forming words. The number of distinct signs suggests a syllabary rather than an alphabet. 

However, the script remains undeciphered and its origins unknown. Astonishingly, the disk also seemed to be the world's earliest printed document, created using stamps that bore a sign as raised type. 

The Phaistos disk exemplifies the mystery and unpredictability of technological progress throughout history. The invention of the disk's printing method around 1700 B.C. in Crete raises questions about why it was not adopted more widely and why it took thousands of years for the ideas of ink and a press to arrive at a printing press. 

This artifact challenges historians; if inventions are as unpredictable as the disk suggests, efforts to generalize about the history of technology may be doomed from the outset. However, it is essential to understand the evolution of technology to comprehend history's broadest patterns. 

It's often assumed that inventions arise when a society recognizes a need. But many inventions were developed by curious individuals in the absence of any initial demand for the product. Once the device had been invented, the inventor then had to find an application for it. 

This phenomenon is seen in the history of Thomas Edison's phonograph. When Edison built his first phonograph in 1877, he proposed ten uses for it, such as preserving the last words of dying people or recording books for blind people to hear. Reproduction of music was not a priority for him. However, after a few years, Edison reluctantly accepted that the main use of his phonograph was to record and play music.

Likewise, the motor vehicle, which seems so essential today, was not invented in response to any perceived need. Nikolaus Otto built his first gas engine in 1866, but it was weak, heavy, and seven feet tall, making it less useful than horses. It took almost two decades for engines to improve to the point where they could be used in vehicles. 

Why then, did the disk's precocious technology not widely adopted in Crete or elsewhere in the ancient Mediterranean? Why was its printing method invented around 1700 B.C. in Crete and not at some other time in Mesopotamia, Mexico, or any other ancient center of writing? 

The answer lies in the complex interplay of factors that influence a society's receptivity to new technology. Some societies are more open to innovation while others are more conservative. The development of technology also varies over time within the same society. For example, medieval Islamic societies were technologically advanced and open to innovation, but today, Islamic societies in the Middle East are relatively conservative and not at the forefront of technology.

The development of technology is a complex process shaped by a multitude of factors. The Phaistos disk is a fascinating example of this, highlighting the unpredictability of technological progress and the many influences shaping a society's receptivity to new inventions. Understanding this complexity is crucial for understanding the broader patterns of history.

Was the Mysterious Phaistos Disk the World's Earliest Printed Document?

How did the Aborigines manage to survive in this harsh Australian desert without modern conveniences? 

The Australian desert is infamous for its dry heat. In the 19th century, two European explorers, Robert Burke and William Wills, suffered terribly from the desert’s heat. Despite having advanced technology like guns, they eventually starved and died in the desert, while the Aborigines, who were familiar with the desert, survived on fish, fern cakes, and roasted fat rats.

The differences between Australia and other continents are stark, with Australia being the driest, flat, infertile, and climatically unpredictable continent. It was the last continent to be occupied by Europeans and had the least populous human population. The native Australians lived without farming, herding, metal, substantial buildings, settled villages, and writing, maintaining a nomadic or semi-nomadic lifestyle.

In contrast, New Guinea, which is just 150km from Australia, had farming, settled villages, and more advanced tools. They had higher population densities than the Australians. The question then arises, why did the human societies of Australia remain so “backward” in their development, while the societies of New Guinea “advanced” much faster? 

The answer lies in the cultural anthropology and the geographic distance between Australia and New Guinea. The languages, genes, and physical appearances of Aboriginal Australians and New Guineans have diverged significantly due to lengthy isolation in very different environments. 

The development of New Guinea highland agriculture must have triggered a big population explosion thousands of years ago. However, due to several limitations, the population of traditional New Guinea never exceeded 1,000,000 until European colonial governments brought Western medicine and ended intertribal warfare.

In Australia, the Aboriginal people practiced "firestick farming," modifying and managing the surrounding landscape to increase the production of edible plants and animals. However, the Aboriginal Australian society was far from developing metal tools, writing, and politically complex societies. This was due to their isolation and small population size, lack of advanced technology, and geographic distance from New Guinea and Indonesia.

The resilience of Aboriginal Australians and the development in New Guinea highlight the power of geography in shaping societies. The stark differences between these two societies, despite being geographically close, underscore the effect of environmental conditions on the development of human societies.

Survival of the Fittest: How Geography Shaped Aboriginal Australians and New Guineans

The Austronesian expansion brought Achmad's and Sauakari's ancestors to Java and New Guinea, respectively. This expansion was one of the largest in the last 6,000 years and saw Austronesian languages spanning more than half the globe.

The comparison between the population of Java, the Philippines, and the South Chinese shows a surprising lack of genetic diversity, suggesting a recent spread of South Chinese or tropical Southeast Asians. Food production, infectious diseases, technology, political organization, and writing played key roles in shaping these societies.

In contrast, the Americas were more ecologically fragmented and had a more limited suite of domesticable wild plants and animals. Despite these challenges, Native American societies had made significant strides in their own right, including the development of their own food production systems and complex social organizations.

In the end, the collision of the two hemispheres led to the elimination of populous Native American societies from most temperate areas suitable for European food production and physiology. This historical shift has deep roots in developments between about 11,000 B.C. and A.D. 1, marking a significant milestone in the history of human civilizations.

How Did the Austronesian Expansion and Collision of Hemispheres Shape Our World? 

Africa's history continues to shape its present, from the various native language groups to the distribution of its diverse population. The continent is home to the most diverse range of languages, with 1/4 of the world's languages spoken only in Africa. In fact, three of the world's six major divisions of humanity are confined as natives to Africa. 

A fascinating aspect of Africa's past is the Bantu expansion, where Bantu farmers originated from West Africa's inland savanna and spread throughout the continent, replacing other native groups such as the Khoisan and Pygmies. Over time, the Bantu people acquired new agricultural techniques and technologies, such as iron tools, which greatly aided their expansion. 

Another interesting historical event is the Austronesian colonization of Madagascar. Despite the island being closer to Africa than any other continent, its people have a surprising connection to Southeast Asia. The language spoken in Madagascar is very similar to the Ma'anyan language spoken on the Indonesian island of Borneo, suggesting a long journey across the Indian Ocean by the island's ancestors.

However, Africa's development was slowed by a few key factors. The continent's north-south axis made it difficult for crops and animals to spread, and the lack of domesticable native animal and plant species also hindered progress. Despite these challenges, Africa's rich history and cultural diversity make it a fascinating subject for study.
