They also learn to recognize and manage their own emotions, and understand those of others. The idea is to provide them with the emotional tools they need to succeed not just in school, but in life.

And it seems to be working. Studies show that emotional literacy programs improve children’s academic achievement scores and school performance. They also enhance their emotional and social competence, and their ability to handle relationships. 

Yet, this approach is not about creating a new class but blending lessons on feelings and relationships with other topics already taught. It's about rethinking the way we educate our children, and expanding the role of schools in society. It's about recognizing that emotional intelligence is as important for learning as instruction in math and reading.

One compelling anecdote involves a student at the Troup Middle School in New Haven. Upon hearing that her best friend was pregnant and contemplating suicide, she passed a note to her teacher, knowing that the teacher would care. This act of empathy and understanding was a direct result of the emotional literacy classes she had taken.
