Isn't it time we recognize and affirm women as farmers rather than farm helpers, improve their access to land, training, and resources, and foster institutional innovation designed for female smallholders?

Family planning is another critical element. Two hundred and twenty-five million women in lower-income countries express a desire for contraception but lack access. Securing this right worldwide would have significant positive impacts on women's health, welfare, and life expectancy, and can also help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. 

Furthermore, girls' education impacts global population growth, health outcomes, and economic growth. Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai said, "One child, one teacher, one book, and one pen can change the world." Educated girls realize higher wages, contribute to economic growth, have healthier children, and are less likely to marry as children or against their will. 

Nurturing the potential of each girl, providing equal rights and resources to women, and ensuring access to family planning and reproductive healthcare are not just moral imperatives - they are key to tackling climate change and ensuring a sustainable future.

Can Empowering Women and Girls be the Key to Combating Climate Change?

Cities were once blamed for environmental destruction, but a shift in thinking now considers properly designed and managed urban environments as places where humans can have the lowest impact on the planet. The more cyclists, the safer those modalities become, and the more society reaps numerous returns on investment, including the health benefits of cleaner air and increased physical activity.

In addition to transportation, buildings themselves can be made more sustainable through methods such as insulation, smart thermostats, and LED lighting. Insulation can make buildings more energy efficient, reducing utility bills and improving air quality. Smart thermostats can learn and take independent action, reducing energy consumption by 10 to 20 percent in an average building. LED lighting, meanwhile, can reduce energy use for lighting by 35 percent.

Initiatives are in place to protect and restore peatlands, ensuring they continue to act as a significant carbon sink.

Indigenous communities often engage in practices such as agroforestry, pastoralism, and traditional forest management that conserve biodiversity, maintain a range of ecosystems services, and safeguard their cultures. 

Afforestation, the creation of new forests where there were none before, is another important practice in the age of warming. Innovative approaches in afforestation can create new forests that are ecologically sound, socially just, and economically beneficial.

Finally, telepresence—the use of technology to interact from afar—can reduce the need for business travel, thus avoiding a host of travel-related carbon emissions.

While transportation is necessary for modern life, there are many ways in which we can make it more sustainable. The process of diverting and recovering waste material is sometimes called valorization - extracting the value that an item retains when it is thrown away. 

But what about industrial recycling? Consider the interesting example of the Interface Corporation, a global company that makes carpet tiles. In 2012, they formed a partnership with the Zoological Society of London to turn discarded fishing nets into 100% recycled carpet yarn. This initiative not only provided a sustainable way of disposing of used fishing nets but also empowered local communities through finance of local conservation projects.

Recycling must be seen as a key element of managing waste without further warming the world. But we also need to look beyond just recycling. We need to explore alternative materials like bioplastics and alternative cement, and invest in water and energy-saving technologies. 

Consider bioplastics, for example. While plastic has dominated our world's materials, bioplastics offer a more sustainable alternative. They can be derived from plants or other renewable feedstocks and can reduce emissions and sequester carbon. They also offer other benefits like technical advantages and the potential to help address the world's plastic trash crisis.

What about water-saving at home? Did you know that hot water is responsible for a quarter of residential energy use worldwide? By introducing efficient appliances and fixtures, and adopting water-saving behaviors, we can significantly reduce water use, thereby reducing energy consumption simultaneously. 

As we navigate through the 21st century, let's embrace the mantra of "Reduce, reuse, recycle" and aim for a more sustainable and climate-friendly future.
