But it wasn't all grim. HubSpot was known for its quirky culture. The Halloween party was a prime example, where employees came to work in elaborate costumes, turning the office into a playground. Yet, this fun façade often masked the harsh realities of the workplace. Employees were under constant surveillance, their every move tracked by software. In the midst of this, HubSpot faced internal struggles. The company’s culture, heavily focused on youth, was exemplified by a New York Times article where CEO Brian Halligan controversially stated that “gray hair and experience are really overrated.” This sparked outrage, particularly among older employees who felt marginalized. Dan, feeling alienated and undervalued, publicly criticized Halligan’s remarks with a snarky Facebook post, igniting a viral discussion on age discrimination in tech.

Amidst this chaos, Dan was offered a job in Hollywood, signaling his impending departure from the tumultuous world of HubSpot.

To accommodate the growing crowd, the event moved to the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center. Janelle Monáe was even hired to perform.

Dan returned to HubSpot post-leave and had his own responsibilities, including moderating a panel of venture capitalists and co-presenting with his PR friend, Julia. However, logistical hiccups led to Julia's cancellation, sparking tension with the event organizers, Monica and Eileen. Despite Dan's apologies, Trotsky, his boss, berated him, making him feel increasingly alienated.

Trotsky's hostility intensified, culminating in a walk where he confessed his dissatisfaction with HubSpot. The IPO seemed doomed, and he was only in it for a stock score. His anger towards Dan grew, and he accused him of lacking team spirit and respect. Attempts to reconcile failed, leading to more abuse. Trotsky resigned under similar accusations, and the CEO, Halligan, was sanctioned but not fired. This scandal ignited speculation about the book, believed to be Dan's, and brought intense media scrutiny.

Despite the turmoil, HubSpot handled the crisis poorly, with vague press releases and stonewalling the press. The situation worsened when HubSpot’s security called on a reporter trying to get the story, making the company look even more secretive.

Dan began to fear for his privacy and safety, suspecting that HubSpot might have hacked his computer or accessed his personal information. This paranoia was fueled by past incidents like strange login attempts on his accounts and a friend’s warning about HubSpot monitoring his Facebook activity.
