Epictetus was a Greek Stoic philosopher born into slavery in 50 AD in Hierapolis, Phrygia (modern-day Turkey). He gained his freedom and went on to teach philosophy in Rome and later in Nicopolis, Greece. His teachings, which emphasize inner freedom, resilience, and the importance of focusing on what is within our control, were recorded by his pupil Arrian in works such as "Discourses" and the "Enchiridion" (also known as "The Handbook"). These texts remain influential in the study of Stoic philosophy.
