We need to make changes—not just in managing our time better, but in understanding the why behind our busyness. We need to create margin, plan for the unplannable, and prioritize our spiritual health. Kevin's book aims to help you (and him) find ways to reclaim your time, sanity, and souls.

We also stay busy to earn and spend on possessions, or to prove ourselves to others. Ambition for our own glory can mask as ambition for God’s glory. Some of us never rest, constantly trying to prove something to someone from our past. Even seeking pity for being busy can be a form of pride.

Pride can be behind our poor planning, control issues, perfectionism, and desire for prestige. Social media often fuels this pride, making us seek validation from strangers while neglecting those who depend on us daily.

The solution isn't to become lazy or ambitionless. It’s about discerning our motivations. Are we doing good or just trying to look good? For instance, Kevin suggests that coaching your daughter’s soccer team should be about spending time with her and her teammates, not about avoiding disappointing others.

Moreover, Kevin believes that we need to accept that we can't multitask effectively. Our brains can't handle multiple cognitive tasks simultaneously without sacrificing quality. This means choosing what not to do is just as important as deciding what to do.

As parents, our role is to provide love, discipline, and guidance without succumbing to the pressure of doing everything perfectly. Our children need us to be present and less stressed rather than frantically trying to meet every demand.

It’s about focusing on what truly matters and being at peace with not being able to do it all. A few years ago, Kevin had a revealing conversation with two seminary students struggling with social media addiction. Despite their intent to enter ministry, they found themselves unable to escape hours on Facebook and mindless web surfing.

Their constantly connected lives created new capabilities and dangers, leading to addiction, acedia (spiritual listlessness), and a fear of being alone.

Nicholas Carr, in "The Shallows," highlights how the Internet can erode attention and make individuals dependent on constant connectivity. This digital busyness can scatter focus and parch memory, making people compulsive information seekers. 

Acedia, as Richard John Neuhaus explains, is not mere laziness but a refusal to engage deeply with life and spirituality, often masked by incessant online activity. Lastly, the digital age makes constant connectivity the norm, leaving individuals scared of solitude and the 'gaping hole' in their hearts that only God can fill.

To combat these threats, Kevin believes it's crucial to cultivate a healthy suspicion of technology, set boundaries, and integrate old-fashioned practices like reading physical books and writing letters. Embracing a rhythm of work and rest is essential. Jason, a colleague, once urged Kevin to take regular days off, highlighting the importance of rest for long-term productivity. The Bible supports both hard work and rest, and even the best in the world, like Olympian Bernard Lagat, recognize the necessity of downtime.

Sleep is another critical aspect. Culture often glorifies sleep deprivation, but it leads to various health issues and decreased productivity. D.A. Carson argues that getting adequate sleep is a spiritual discipline, crucial for well-being.

Martha, frustrated, asked Jesus to tell Mary to help her. But Jesus gently reminded Martha that Mary had chosen the better path. Martha’s busyness wasn’t wrong, but it wasn’t the best.

Many people relate to Martha, feeling overwhelmed by their endless to-do lists. They often give Jesus their spiritual leftovers. But the story of Martha and Mary reminds everyone to prioritize sitting at Jesus’s feet. It’s not about spending every moment in contemplation but ensuring to keep first things first.

So, if you’re feeling swamped and looking for a one-point plan to restore order in your life, here’s Kevin's best advice: devote yourself to the Word of God and prayer. This can mean public worship and private devotion. Start small, even five minutes a day, and make it a consistent habit. This practice brings peace and discipline to life.

Everyone has twenty-four hours in a day, equally distributed. They do what they think is most important with those hours. If they believe that sitting at Jesus’s feet is the best opportunity each day, they will rearrange their priorities accordingly.
