A geologist from the University of California, Stanley Margolis, subjected the statue to a battery of tests and concluded it was genuine. Fourteen months later, the Getty bought the statue.

However, some were skeptical. Italian art historian Federico Zeri, Greek sculpture expert Evelyn Harrison, former Metropolitan Museum of Art director Thomas Hoving, and others felt something was wrong. Hoving, for example, thought it looked too 'fresh' for its supposed age. Despite their reservations, they struggled to articulate why.

Eventually, a symposium of Greek scholars in Athens questioned the kouros's authenticity. Their instincts told them it was a fake. Later, it was discovered that the documents provided by Becchina were forgeries, and the statue's style started to seem more like a mix of different styles from different periods. The kouros most resembled a smaller statue found in a forger's workshop in Rome in the early 1980s. 

This story introduces the concept of the "adaptive unconscious," a part of our brain capable of making rapid decisions based on minimal information. In 1920, against Harding's better judgement, Daugherty convinced him to run for the White House. Harding eventually became President, only to be remembered as one of the worst in American history.

This issue brings us to the concept of first impressions. They can be affected by various factors, like packaging, brand imagery, and how familiar we are with a product.
