Let's face it, our planet is in crisis. We've heard countless pleas to act for future generations, but emissions keep rising, and our climate is nearing a tipping point. It's daunting, right? But here's where it gets interesting—kids are no longer just a future concern. They're speaking up, striking, and demanding change. They see climate change not as an abstract issue but as a direct threat to their right to live full lives.

Take the Green New Deal, for instance. It proposes a radical transformation, one that doesn't just solve the climate crisis but also addresses social and economic injustices. The Green New Deal (GND), a policy proposal for a ten-year economic mobilization to transition the US to a zero-carbon economy, aims to reduce inequality and redress systemic oppression. The vision of power at the heart of the GND is one of redistribution: from private to public, from employer to worker, from the historically advantaged to the historically disadvantaged. We need a fair transition that doesn’t throw people overboard and addresses the long legacy of environmental injustice.

The climate crisis is entangled with other crises, including declining life expectancy, income inequality, and systemic injustices exacerbated by pollution. The GND, like most progressive policy, is grounded in compassion, dignity, and justice. If we are to tackle climate change, we need to shift power away from the 1% and back to the 99%. 

Our economic mobilizations must be the most just in U.S. history if we are to avert the climate crisis and reverse the unraveling of our economy. We need to move together, or we risk not moving at all.

However, an unexpected twist - a class on climate science - changed her trajectory, instilling in her a deep understanding of the imminent threat posed by climate change not to the planet, but to us, its inhabitants.

Hayhoe's journey took her from the University of Toronto to the University of Illinois for graduate studies in climate science. For two decades, she has been on a mission to help cities, states, and federal agencies prepare for climate change impacts. A significant part of her work involves communicating about climate change - in classrooms, on social media platforms, in news shows, and even in Reddit AMAs.

But it's not always smooth sailing. She often faces pushback and accusations of peddling deception. Yet, Hayhoe persists, driven by her conviction in the data that clearly points to human-induced climate change. The challenge is not just the skeptics, but the lack of urgency among many of us. We understand the planet is warming due to human activities, but we fail to see it as a present threat to our own lives.

Biophilic Design: Rethinking Our Relationship with Nature Amid Climate Crisis

Meet Varshini Prakash. As a teenager, she learned about the climate crisis and was terrified by its implications. Despite feeling powerless, she fell in love with social movements in college and started actively protesting against fossil fuel infrastructure. 

Varshini realized that she wasn't alone in facing the climate crisis and felt empowered by the support she received from others. Varshini co-founded the Sunrise Movement in 2017, aiming to spark massive government action and drive wholesale transformation. Today, the Sunrise Movement has over 300 chapters across the country, working to make climate action a priority.

Here's a similar story of Jacqui Patterson. Experiences with racism and the subtleties of it have been a consistent thread in her life. As a human rights activist, she's seen how environmental justice intersects with other forms of injustice, like racism, poverty, and misogyny. 

Working in places like Jamaica and sub-Saharan Africa, she's seen the devastating impacts of industrial exploitation and climate change. Now, as the senior director of the NAACP’s Environmental and Climate Justice Program, she advocates for communities most vulnerable to climate change and believes a radical transformation of our societies is needed.

Another activist, Gina McCarthy, served in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency during President Obama’s second term and is now the president of the Natural Resources Defense Council. She believes that combating climate change requires a broad-based demand from local communities, states, businesses, and nonprofits. 

McCarthy emphasizes the connection between climate change and health and the importance of women leaders in the fight against climate change. She sees climate change as the most significant public health challenge facing the world today and believes actions to address it can bring immediate benefits like improved public health and safer, more resilient communities.

Are Women the Key to Unlocking the Solution to the Climate Crisis?

In 1991, Chris Foster, a university student studying philosophy and math, started living life with minimal impact on the environment. He picked fallen fruit and slept outside, wanting to be as invisible as possible. 

However, this lifestyle didn't relieve his feelings of guilt and foreboding. He felt a deep sense of dread and his previous bouts of depression returned. 

His family doesn't understand his extreme self-denial. They attribute his behavior to past childhood abuse. However, Chris sees it differently. A defining moment for him was a family trip to Mount St. Helens where he saw clear-cut land. The sight of bare ground and tree stumps as far as he could see was so shocking, it prompted him to label it as evil. From that point on, he didn't want to be part of a society that caused such destruction.

Years later, Ashley Sanders, an author, befriends Chris. They both share a deep concern for the environment. Chris expresses his belief that it's too late to stop catastrophic climate change and feels he has become complacent. Ashley, on the other hand, is just starting her journey into environmental despair. She becomes obsessed with reducing her carbon footprint, sometimes to the point of carrying her garbage around for a week to remind herself of her consumption. 

However, the constant worry and anxiety about the future take a toll on Ashley. She becomes depressed and retreats to a cabin in upstate New York for a break. But even in her retreat, she can't stop thinking about the potential extinction of the planet's life forms. This leads her to the concept of "solastalgia", a term invented by environmental philosopher Glenn Albrecht to describe the distress caused by environmental change in one's home environment. 

In her exploration of these feelings, Ashley also comes across a group of philosophers, artists, and doctors working to create a dictionary for the Anthropocene, a proposed geological epoch dating from the commencement of significant human impact on Earth's geology and ecosystems. They are trying to find words to describe the feelings and experiences of individuals living through mass climate change. It emphasizes the importance of community support and collective action in addressing the challenges of climate change.

Climate Despair, Solastalgia, and the Anthropocene: A Journey through Emotional Impact of Environmental Change

Growing up in Ukraine, Jane Zelikova developed a deep connection with soil. This passion continued throughout her life and led her to a career in ecology and climate change research. She discovered the critical role of soil in our ecosystem, supporting all agriculture and terrestrial biomes. 

Jane's research has shown that soil is not only necessary for plant growth, but it also plays a crucial role in climate regulation and sequestering carbon. She shares that our relationship with soil needs to be reevaluated and respected. Over the last twelve thousand years, human activities have led to the loss of about 133 billion metric tons of carbon from soil, impacting its fertility and health. This means the United Kingdom and parts of Brazil, central Africa, and Southeast Asia are facing a potential loss of soil fertility. 

Jane argues that to combat this, we need to rethink our reliance on technology and chemicals. We need to support the billions of microbes in soil that transform organic matter into nutrients. By doing so, we can improve soil health, making agricultural fields more resilient to climate change. 

Healthy, diverse soils are not just beneficial for the environment but also for our food security. With the world's population expected to reach ten billion by mid-century, pressure on our soil resources is only going to increase. Therefore, investing in soil health and sustainable farming practices is crucial for our future. 

There are many farmers like Keisha Cameron, Larisa Jacobson, and Germaine Jenkins who are using heritage farming practices to improve soil health and mitigate climate change. Their experiences show that we have the power to heal our relationship with soil and, in doing so, heal our climate and ourselves. 

Can Rethinking Our Relationship with Soil Help Combat Climate Change?

At just 15, Alexandria Villasenor is an active climate activist, working tirelessly to make her voice heard. She is part of a generation that is witnessing the devastating impacts of climate change and, driven by a sense of urgency, is taking bold action. She was motivated to become an activist after experiencing the harsh effects of California's wildfires. 

Alexandria is among the many young activists worldwide who have been inspired by Greta Thunberg, the Swedish teenager who initiated the global climate strike movement. Alexandria herself has been on a school strike every Friday to demand action on the climate crisis. 

In addition to protests, these young activists are taking legal action. In 2015, twenty-one youth plaintiffs from the US filed a case alleging that the US government's contribution to climate change violates their rights to life, liberty, and property. 

Alexandria's story is a powerful call to action. She invites us to join the youth in their fight for climate justice. "We need your help," she says, "Welcome to the uprising!" 

Another activist, Christine E. Nieves Rodriguez, shares her experience of living through Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. She witnessed how community bonds and mutual aid became essential for survival in the face of disaster. This inspired her and others to launch the Proyecto de Apoyo Mutuo, a mutual aid project that feeds hundreds of people. 

This story is a testament to the power of community and the human spirit in times of crisis. It's an inspiring example of resilience and collective action. 

Through these stories, we're reminded that the fight against climate change is far from over. It's a collective effort that involves all of us. Let's continue to strive for a sustainable future, driven by the inspiring actions of these individuals.
